This week's Big Conversation show was not scheduled until we finished our postgraduate examination on 23rd of December, 2018. But we then decided to squeeze in the show before the end of our term and talk about the exam itself. And we are also going to talk about 'boycotting foreign festivals'. In China, students do need to take a special exam to gain a chance to study further for postgraduate courses. This exam usually takes 2 steps: a). paper exam b). interview. It sounds like how universities in some western countries recruit students but it is utterly different. Firstly in most good universities, there are very limited amount of students who will be able to go straight to one university to study further without taking these exams. They are called "Recommended Students", who will be chosen based on their academic performance and other factors like competitions they entered and certificates they had. Secondly, students who are not that lucky need to take the exam that is actually really complicated. The paper exam contains various parts. Usually it includes Politics, English or Maths, and 2 specific subjects which are related to the major and the school that students chose. And those specific subjects for some universities went extremely wrong this year. In this week's show, we have producer Phillis who took part in the exam and Serena who is a 'Recommended Student'. We will also have a chat with Gabrielle, who decided to study abroad in France instead of taking exams in China. And we'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch!
